Selkirk Rex - Cat

The Selkirk Rex is a uniquely charming breed known for its distinctive curly coat that gives it a plush, teddy bear-like appearance. Unlike other Rex breeds, the Selkirk Rex has a full, dense coat with loose, individual curls. Combined with their sweet, patient personality, these cats make wonderful cuddly companions.

The Selkirk Rex originated in 1987 in Montana when a shelter cat gave birth to an unusual curly-coated kitten. Persian breeder Jeri Newman adopted the kitten, named her Miss DePesto, and discovered that her curly coat was caused by a dominant gene—unlike the recessive genes responsible for other Rex breeds. Newman developed the breed by crossing Miss DePesto with Persians, Exotics, and British Shorthairs, creating the substantial, plush cats we know today.

Physical characteristics and distinctive features of this breed.

Selkirk Rex cats are medium to large, with a rounded, muscular body and substantial bone structure. They come in both longhair and shorthair varieties, with both having the characteristic curly coat. The curls are most pronounced around the neck, belly, and flanks. Even their whiskers are often curly. They have round heads with full cheeks, large round eyes, and medium-sized ears. They come in all colors and patterns.

Temperament

Personality traits and behavioral tendencies.

Selkirk Rex cats are known for their sweet, laid-back, and patient personalities. They are affectionate and enjoy cuddling but are not overly demanding. These gentle cats get along well with children and other pets. They are playful but not hyperactive, and they retain their kitten-like personality well into adulthood. Selkirk Rex cats are adaptable and do well in various living situations.

Grooming

The Selkirk Rex's curly coat requires regular grooming to prevent matting, especially in the longhair variety. Gentle brushing two to three times per week helps maintain the curls and remove loose hair. Over-brushing can straighten the curls, so a light touch is best.

Some owners find that finger-combing works better than brushing for maintaining the curl pattern. Bathing occasionally can help enhance the curls. Regular nail trimming and dental care are important parts of their routine.
